The United States won bronze at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and gold in Beijing in 2008. The Americans are looking to win their sixth Olympic medal ever, which would be the most medal ever, and will now face an Italian team that has finished in the top four at its eighth consecutive Olympic Games.
The USA won Group B with a 3-0 record and beat 2016 Olympic champions Brazil 3-1 in the quarterfinals (26-24, 28-30, 25-19, 25-19). The Americans failed to capitalize on a 2-1 lead against Poland in the semifinals, losing a close fifth set 15-13, putting them one step away from playing for gold.
