Used Cars: ‘Overlooked’ used hatchbacks for £10,000

A well-known automotive personality has taken to YouTube to reveal three new electric cars that can be bought on the used car market for under £10,000.

Jim Starling runs the YouTube channel “Definitely Not A Guru” and regularly presents videos in which he reacts to the latest developments in the automotive industry and recommends the best used cars to buy.

In a recent video, Jim talks about cheap used electric cars and recommends that viewers consider the SEAT Mii Electric, a city car he currently owns.

He said: “I have one of these, I got it recently. This one has 41,500 miles on it, the range is stated as 160 miles. You can get that in the real world – it’s possible with these things, without full-on hypermiling. I’ve never seen less than four miles per kWh, and there aren’t many electric vehicles I can say that about.

“So £8,659 for a 2021 model. The fastest charge is around 40kW, so if you do regular long journeys it’s not for you. But for the city it’s brilliant if you have a wallbox at home. It’s a great second car for most households and for many people it could actually be their first car.”

Based on the petrol-powered SEAT Mii, which in turn is based on the Volkswagen Up!, the Mii Electric was launched in 2019 as one of the most affordable electric models in the UK.

With its relatively small 36.8 kWh battery, the Mii Electric is far from the most practical electric vehicle, but it still offers a usable range of up to 257 kilometers per charge and a spacious interior.

Today, used car buyers can get behind the wheel of a SEAT Mii Electric from around £8,500, with a budget of £10,000 enough to get a 2021 model with less than 20,000 miles on the clock.

Later in the video, Jim suggested that viewers looking for something a little more unusual could also get a BMW i3 for under £10,000.

He added: “The next model is a BMW i3 and a lot of people overlook these. They look very quirky and very individual and that’s something. The price is great – £10,000 for a 2019 model with 28,000 miles on the clock.

“On the whole these have held their value quite well so this looks like a really good price for one of these cars with this mileage. In terms of performance, it takes 7.3 seconds to 100 km/h, 68 hp, so not to be sniffed at and definitely worth considering if you’re not doing those super long journeys.”

Finally, Jim recommended that buyers looking for an affordable electric vehicle consider the Renault Zoe, as they are often overlooked due to their low safety rating.

He continued: “This is a 2019 model, a 41kWh R110. If you go for the R135 there is a larger battery but this should serve you well. Essentially £7,000, 38,000 miles, 2019 model.

“The range is 300 kilometres, which should be enough for most people, especially for driving in the city and on trips around the area. A lot of people cling to the Euro NCAP rating, it got one star, but read the report yourself and find out how relevant it is for you. Take a look and rest assured.”
