Apple has proudly announced that iOS 18 will bring the “biggest redesign” of the Photos app on iPhone since its launch at WWDC 2024, but in reality, it doesn’t seem to be going down well with users.
In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple appears to have rolled back some of the changes it made to Photos.
Gurman said the redesign was “probably a little too bold and potentially confusing” and said the latest beta version of iOS 18 removed the new carousel feature.

“We also made the photo grid more user-friendly and moved the albums further up the app to reduce scrolling,” Gurman said.
“Perhaps most importantly, Apple has moved saved content back into the main photo grid. These changes come at a crucial time: Apple now considers iOS 18 complete and is preparing to add the software to the upcoming iPhone 16 lineup.”
We reported last month how Apple executives touted the app’s more “personal” nature, but it seems they moved too quickly with changes to one of the iPhone’s most used apps – and didn’t want to wait until the iPhone 16 to fix the problem.
How do you like the new Photos app in beta? I have to admit, I found it confusing at first, but the more I used it, the more I liked it.
