Valley Health System opens a glaucoma center at its Ridgewood eye care practice.

The new group, located at 1200 East Ridgewood Ave., specializes in traditional and minimally invasive procedures for patients with advanced glaucoma.

According to the World Health Organization, glaucoma is a disease that damages the optic nerve in the eye and is the second leading cause of blindness. There are an estimated 60 million diagnosed cases worldwide, the organization said.

Other conditions treated include:

  • Suspected glaucoma
  • POAG – primary open-angle glaucoma
  • Secondary glaucoma, which occurs as a complication of eye surgery, injury, infection, or other eye diseases.
  • Low-tension glaucoma
  • Anatomical angle-closure glaucoma
  • Angle-closure glaucoma
  • Steroid-induced glaucoma
  • Ocular hypertensive disorder
  • Pseudoexfoliative glaucoma
  • Pigment dispersion glaucoma

Depending on the treatment and specific condition, procedures can be performed in the office or on an outpatient basis at the Luckow Pavilion on Valley Medical Campus in Paramus.

The center is led by Dr. Tanya Fooks, a Valley ophthalmologist with 14 years of training and experience diagnosing and treating patients with glaucoma. The team also includes Dr. David Benderson, an ophthalmologist, and Dr. Ivan Tseng, an optometrist, as well as patient navigator Dana Silver.

Early diagnosis is crucial

Although glaucoma is more common in older adults, it can occur at any age. People with a family history of glaucoma who have not had a complete eye examination for at least a year are advised to see an eye doctor.

Because early diagnosis is key to treating the disease, Valley’s new group will continuously monitor patients and provide medical interventions at appropriate times to reduce the likelihood or occurrence of vision impairment, the network said.

“We offer multidisciplinary care that combines treatment with highly personalized service from our staff, including a patient navigator who coordinates each patient’s care and answers any questions before, during and after appointments,” Fooks explained. “With our seamless care coordination, we can make planning and receiving care simpler and easier for patients, while shortening the time frame in which we can help patients make progress in preserving their vision.”
