After introducing the ID.2 concept over a year ago, Volkswagen’s cheapest electric vehicle is now on the market and being tested.

To defend itself against the cheap electric cars from Tesla and Chinese manufacturers, Volkswagen presented the ID.2all concept vehicle last March. It will be positioned below the ID.3 and will have a starting price of under 25,000 euros or around 27,500 dollars.

The electric car “shows where we want to take the brand,” said VW passenger car boss Thomas Shafer.

Based on an updated version of the MEB platform that underlies the current ID models (and Ford’s Electric Explorer and the new Capri EV for Europe), the ID.2 is expected to achieve a WLTP range of up to 450 km.

Volkswagen has adopted design elements from its iconic Golf and Beetle models, but with a modern twist for the electric age. The design gives a taste of VW’s new design language.
