Voter ID requirement to be introduced on Nevada ballots in November

(The Center Square) – It’s official. Nevada voters will be asked this November whether the state should require voters to show identification when they cast their ballots.

An organization called Repair The Vote PAC championed the initiative and collected the signatures needed to put the issue on the ballot. Repair The Vote PAC announced Friday that it will be ballot question number 7 in the upcoming 2024 election.

David Gibbs, chairman of Repair The Vote PAC, said in a statement that his organization was “thrilled.”

“This is more than just a number on a ballot,” Gibbs said. “It is a critical measure to protect the sanctity and security of our elections.”

The signatures for the voter ID initiative were validated in July.

A total of 185,573 people have signed a petition from Repair The Vote PAC to put voter ID on the ballot in November.

As The Center Square previously reported, the required number is 102,362 signatures, with an equal number of signatures from each congressional district.

“Our team has created a grassroots movement around the simple idea that Nevadans deserve trust in the process,” Gibbs said this week. “They’ve put it into action and can now share why they’re voting yes on 7!”

If Ballot Question 7 is passed this November, it will appear on the ballot again in November 2026 under the same number to satisfy a requirement in Article 19 of the Nevada Constitution regarding initiatives and amendments.

Meanwhile, Repair The Vote PAC said Friday that it will continue to “educate voters about the importance of the voter ID initiative” in public forums and through community engagement.

In March, the Nevada Supreme Court upheld Repair The Vote’s voter identification petition collection. At the time, Gibbs called the ruling “a testament to the power of civic engagement” that demonstrated the importance of upholding the basic principles of democracy.
