“Wait until she dyes her hair blonde”

On Tuesday, Republicans in Congress mocked Vice President Kamala Harris for her announcement that she would reintroduce and sign a bill to fund border security initiatives.

The package, which would have provided funding for the border wall, failed in the Senate in February after former President Donald Trump urged Republicans to reject it. Harris promised in her speech at the Democratic National Convention on Thursday that she would revive the bill.

The Senate Republicans X account posted a meme of Michael Scott from “The Office” sitting in front of a whiteboard that reads, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take,” with attributions to the character and Wayne Gretzky, the original author of the quote.

In the Republican post, Harris’ face is superimposed over Scott’s and the white board reads “‘Build the Wall.'” These words are attributed to the vice president and Trump, who had already promoted them during the election campaign.

Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas also weighed in, writing on X: “Wait until she dyes her hair blonde.”

Republicans shared the post in response to an Axios report claiming Harris would “reverse” her previous positions. When the vice president first announced her run for the White House in 2019, she claimed the border wall was Trump’s “medieval prestige project.”

She also wrote on Facebook in 2020 that the wall was a “complete waste of taxpayer money” and would not make the United States safer.

One of the negotiators of the bill that Harris supported told Axios that $650 million would have been earmarked for building the wall.

“It requires the Trump border wall,” said Sen. James Lankford (R-Oklahoma). “The bill itself sets the standards that were set during the Trump administration: Here’s where it’s going to be built. This is how it has to be built, the height, the type, all during the Trump construction period.”

Democrats called the bill a compromise. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut), another negotiator, urged his colleagues to support resubmitting the bill in May.

My hope is that we come together and Republicans put this country and border security ahead of the political prospects of their presidential candidate, Donald Trump,” he said.

The Harris campaign did not respond to The National Desk’s request for comment.
