Watch the video: Chemistry student loves to “blow things up”

Meet Nora, a chemistry student at UW-Green Bay. While studying at UW-Green Bay, Manitowoc Campus, she fell in love with chemistry after taking a general chemistry course with Prof. Amy Kabrhel. “Her teaching style is infectious. The way she teaches made me want to learn more. She shows you a formula on the board and shows you how to use it to blow something up.” The hands-on experiments, participating in research, and professors who take the time to get to know each student inspired Nora to graduate and make a difference in the way medicine is made.

Transcript: When I started at the Manitowoc campus, I actually wasn’t sure what I wanted to study, so I took General Chemistry with Dr. Amy Kabrhel, her teaching style is infectious. Her way of teaching made me want to learn more. She shows you a formula on the board and shows you how to use it to blow something up. That solidified my decision to pursue the chemistry path. Being at the main campus was a very positive experience. The professors here really make an effort to make what we learn interesting. The hands-on learning here is very helpful in really understanding why something happens. My favorite chemistry lab so far has been the Organic Chemistry 2 lab. My favorite lab we did there was actually making homemade glow sticks, so definitely a fun thing to do. The professors here on campus take such an incredible amount of time with the students. They just know your name, they know what you want, they know what you hope to do after graduation. Sometimes some of the professors ask me questions about things I don’t even remember talking to them about. They just remember the students so well, you know. It’s a really welcoming feeling. On campus, the professors are always doing their own research projects. There are opportunities to collaborate on their projects and get a little bit more hands-on experience. My goal in research is to create change and make things better for the community. It really bothers me to hear in the news about drug recalls or shortages because there isn’t enough product to make them. So my goal is to pursue graduate school in pharmacy and drug discovery in hopes of finding a more natural way to make drugs and treatments, moving away from synthetics and toward things we can derive naturally rather than making in the lab.
