Water pipe burst in Queens: Subway service in Howard Beach affected by repair work on underground pipes

OLD HOWARD BEACH, Queens (WABC) – The hours-long suspension of train service on Line A at Howard Beach-JFK Airport has finally been lifted.

A previous water main burst had interrupted supply to the line while workers worked to repair it.

Department of Environmental Protection crews responded to the area of 159th Avenue and Coleman Square, where they discovered the burst water pipe shortly before 7 a.m.

The MTA has suspended service of the Far Rockaway-bound A train at the station.

Shuttle buses were provided between the station and the North Conduit Avenue Aqueduct.

Customers also had the option to cross the Broad Channel and cross to the other side to catch a northbound train that continued to stop in Howard Beach.

The Port Authority reports that Kennedy Airport’s Airtrain service was not interrupted.

In the meantime, crews continue to pump water and remove debris from the site to gain access to the main water break.

Drinking fountains will be installed in the area to ensure affected residents and businesses have access to drinking water during repairs.
