Wayne County man wants to help his family after winning a million dollars in the lottery

LANSING, MI – A Wayne County man who won a $1 million jackpot on the Michigan Lottery’s Gold Multiplier instant game says he wants to use the money to help his family.

“I scratched the ticket and saw I had one number right, but I didn’t scratch off the winning amount right away,” said the 53-year-old winner, who wished to remain anonymous. “I scratched off the rest of the ticket and saw I had no more numbers right, so I scratched off the winning amount. When I saw a $1 million win, my jaw dropped! I immediately called my son and fiancé to tell them the news.

“This win is life changing and one of the best things that has ever happened to me! I’ve been nervous for days and it still doesn’t seem real.”

The winner purchased his ticket at the Tel-Wick Amoco Service Center, 9225 Telegraph Road in Taylor, and recently visited the lottery headquarters in Lansing to claim his prize. He opted to receive the money as a one-time lump sum payment of $693,000 rather than as an annuity. Other than helping his family, the winner did not indicate any other plans for his winnings.

The last Michigan players to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot are the Breakfast Club lottery club, which won a jackpot of $842 million in June 2024. Members plan to use the money to buy a home in Florida and travel.

And although they were lucky winners, it’s wise for players to check their tickets immediately, as a $1 million Mega Millions prize sold in Southfield in 2023 went unclaimed. The money went to the state’s school aid fund instead.
