Concern is growing in Wayne County following the discovery of the rare Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE) virus in horses in Galen. This mosquito-borne disease, which recently claimed a life in New Hampshire, has prompted local authorities to take preventative measures.
Diane Devlin, Wayne County Public Health Director, stressed that while there is a vaccine for horses, there is no treatment or vaccination for humans. Veterinary teams are currently monitoring the health of horses on site, and residents are being urged to protect themselves by wearing long clothing and avoiding standing water to reduce exposure to mosquitoes.
EEE is a dangerous virus and communities across the Northeast are taking measures to contain its spread, including nighttime restrictions.
