Former England captain Wayne Rooney has put his car up for sale on Auto Trader after being banned from driving.

The Everton striker was given a two-year ban after being caught drink-driving following a night out in Cheshire last year.

Rooney was arrested when police stopped him in Wilmslow in the early hours of 1 September 2017.

He was banned from practising for several years, made to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work under a community order and fined £170 by Stockport Magistrates Court.

Rather than let his engine gather dust in his garage, Rooney has decided to put his plug-in hybrid BMW i8 up for sale on the car trading website for £64,995.

Erin Baker, editorial director of Auto Trader, said: “It’s refreshing to see a footballer in a hybrid vehicle rather than a Chelsea tractor or a gas-guzzling supercar. And it’s even more refreshing to see a footballer’s car in a plain colour.

“The trend of more Premier League stars charging their cars is also reflected in the UK car market. Auto Trader data for December 2017 shows that searches for electric vehicles increased by 56 percent compared to the previous year – and there was also a significant increase in searches for hybrid vehicles of 50 percent.

“The uptake of electric and hybrid vehicles continues to grow across the UK as manufacturers invest in more affordable and attractive models and car buyers become more aware of the benefits of owning an alternative fuel vehicle.”

Rooney, 32, is the BMW’s sole owner, having bought it new in January 2015 for around £50,000 above the current asking price.
