Wayne Rooney regrets missed opportunities but takes positives from point – The Irish News

Plymouth head coach Wayne Rooney rued missed opportunities as his side drew 1-1 with Hull and picked up their first point of the season in the Sky Bet Championship.

Rooney admitted: “I’m a little disappointed we didn’t get three points because I thought we deserved them.”

City captain Lewis Coyle scored a superb equaliser in the 63rd minute – which was praised by both head coaches – to cancel out Ibrahim Cissoko’s 52nd minute opener.

Rooney said: “We had a lot of energy and commitment and created some good chances.

“We just weren’t consistent enough and that’s what I’m going to work on with the players this week. We need to be more consistent.”

“I think if we had scored in the first 10-15 minutes it would have been very difficult for Hull.

“Compared to last Sunday, it was a difference like night and day. What I saw today is encouraging. I think the win against Cheltenham in the cup during the week helped.

“The boys have been great all week. I’m actually a bit disappointed for them that we didn’t get all three points because they’ve worked really hard this week.

“Ibrahim is an exciting player. I was delighted with our workload. There were a lot of positives this week.”

“When you take the lead and don’t win the game, you’re always a bit disappointed. It was a great goal (to equalise).

“I hope we can get another goalkeeper before next weekend’s game and hopefully one or two more before the transfer deadline.”

City boss Tim Walter said: “We tried to create something from the start, but it was an open game, there was more transition – and I don’t like that.”

“We tried to play a little more patiently at half-time, to be calmer and to bring more possession into our game, which we managed to do.

“But then unfortunately we conceded a goal.

“The reaction afterwards was brilliant. It was a perfect goal from Lewi, he ran the whole way across the pitch – I like to see that -, dribbled inside, played a one-two and then the perfect finish… you can’t describe it any better than that.

“It was still an open game, we tried to have more possession, we were in good positions, but we went back, not forward.

“It’s just a process and we’re getting better and better.

“It’s not an easy game. Wherever you go, it’s a tough competition. The game is all about probabilities.”

“The goal was not the result of a mistake by our team. The same goes for a new philosophy that I have developed in eight or nine years as a coach, and they will not learn that in eight weeks.”

“Football is about learning and belief. I’m glad we don’t have a game this week. We can work on the pitch in training. It’s just pre-season. We can improve in every game.”
