Wayne State University student wins award for best news story | News

WAYNE — Becca Arkfeld of Battle Creek, a student at Wayne State College, won the Pinnacle Award for Best News Story (College category) at the Nebraska Broadcasters Association (NBA) Pinnacle Awards on Aug. 7. The ceremony was part of the NBA’s annual convention.

Arkfeld reported for KWSC-TV on the temperature in Wayne State’s dormitories during the fall 2023 semester. Arkfeld, a senior at Wayne State, is studying electronic media.

“This award is a great example of the progress KWSC-TV and our entire faculty have made,” said Pat Janssen, a lecturer in the Department of Communication Studies at Wayne State University. “This was the first TV news package Becca ever did and it was a phenomenal accomplishment on her part. She is a true example of the achievement that is possible with our students. I am very proud of her and what she has accomplished.”

Arkfeld’s radio talents were also on display during the spring 2024 semester. She was one of several KWSC-FM radio students who participated in a 24-hour fundraising livestream. The livestream raised more than $1,700 for Haven House in Wayne to help survivors of domestic violence.

Arkfeld also received a first place Golden Leaf Award during the Northern Plains Collegiate Media Association’s annual conference in the spring semester of 2024. She won the award for best video news story.

Arkfeld graduated from Battle Creek High School in 2021 and is the daughter of Rick and Karen Arkfeld of Battle Creek.

The Pinnacle Awards program was established in 1958 to recognize and encourage excellence in broadcasting and community service by Nebraska’s radio and television stations.
