West Branch is working to become “one percent better” with a young team and a new coach

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa (KCRG) – A young, revamped West Branch team will have a new coach this season.

John Nestor Sr. comes from Chicago, where he coached at several major high schools in Illinois as well as the University of Wisconsin, but he says the fundamentals of football are the same.

“It’s simple, you can have it at a small school, you can have it at a big school,” Nestor said. “Effort, toughness, physicality, trust, responsibility. Those are things that work at a small school, in eight-man football or at the biggest schools out there.”

Nestor is also the father of Iowa defensive lineman John Nestor, who helped his father on the sidelines and offered some advice to a very young team that is ready to improve.

“We’ll probably start with about 16 juniors,” Nestor Sr. said. “These guys are hungry though, they’re not going to let their youth dictate how far they go.”

“Another thing coach preaches is effort in practice and pushing each other to do our best,” said junior lineman Michael Montgomery.

“Our motto at West Branch is ‘Be one percent better than yesterday,'” Nestor said. “So just be the best version of yourself.”

West Branch will open the season hosting Williamsburg.
