Guided courses for seniors

West Valley College offers free courses for older adults through its new Senior Guided Pathways program.

Older adults can take accredited and non-accredited courses and have access to free transportation to the Saratoga campus and technical support from Successful Aging Solutions & Community Consulting.

“By reducing barriers to entry and providing comprehensive career support, Senior Guided Pathways makes it easier for local adults to access community programs, enabling them to find better jobs and improve their quality of life,” said Tylor Taylor, the consulting firm’s CEO, in a press release.

Registration for the program is open until September 8. For more information, visit westvalley.edu/schools/continuing-education/sascc.

Reunion of the band Saratoga High

The 1974 Saratoga High School Band, which traveled to Austria for an international music competition that same year, will reunite on September 28 at Wildwood Park in Saratoga.

The meeting will be held from noon to 3 p.m., and registration is not required. Participants are invited to bring their own food, said event organizer Ron Johnson. The group will share space with the 1974 graduating class of Saratoga High School, which is also holding its 50th reunion.

Closer to free education

The state legislature recently approved a law that would provide students who live in West Valley College’s catchment area with an automatic tuition waiver.

The bill, introduced by Assemblyman Marc Berman, is designed to help simplify the West Valley-Mission Community College District’s existing tuition waiver program. The bill now needs to be signed by Governor Gavin Newsom.

“Today’s bipartisan vote for AB 3158 is a major victory for all students in the West Valley-Mission Community College District and brings us just one step away from tuition-free for all,” Berman said in a press release.
