What it means for Ohio State

With the 2024 season beginning Saturday, Ohio State now has a better idea of what it will take to make it to the 2024 Big Ten Championship game.

The Big Ten Conferences announced their tiebreaking procedures for their football championship on Monday. The Big Ten Championship will feature the top two teams in the conference competing on December 7 at Lucas Oil Stadium. The game will be broadcast on CBS.

The winner of the Big Ten championship automatically receives a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff.

2024 Big Ten Championship Tiebreaker

Here’s a look at the tiebreaker scenarios that would continue until a decision is made:

  1. The teams with the same number of points are compared in direct duels in the regular season.
  2. The teams with the same number of points are compared according to the score with opponents from the same conference.
  3. The tied teams are compared based on their record against common opponents with the best conference record and then go through the common conference opponents based on their placement in the conference standings.
  4. The tied teams are compared based on the best cumulative win percentage of all conference opponents.
  5. The representative will be selected based on the highest ranking by SportSource Analytics (Team Rating Score metric) after the regular season.
  6. The representative will be chosen at random from among the tied teams, conducted by the Commissioner or a designee.

What happens if three or more teams are tied at the top of the Big Ten?

If a tiebreaker results in two teams tied for first place, both teams will play in the championship game.

If the tiebreaker shows that two teams are tied for a position other than first place, the traditional tiebreaker procedure will be initiated.

If a tiebreaker with three or more teams is required within the conference, the following order applies:

  1. The tied teams are compared based on their winning percentage in games that the tied teams are involved in. If all of the tied teams do not play each other, but one team defeats all of the other tied teams, that team is removed from the tiebreaker.
  2. The records of the three or more teams would be compared against all common opponents.
  3. The records of three or more teams tied on points will be compared based on winning percentage against the next best common opponent in the rankings in order of placement.
  4. The records of the three (or more) tied teams are compared based on the best cumulative conference winning percentage of all conference opponents.
  5. The representative will be selected after the regular season based on the highest ranking in SportSource Analytics (Team Rating Score metric).
  6. The draw between the tied teams will be random and will be conducted by the Commissioner or one of his designees.
