What time does the DNC start tonight? Day 2 schedule, where to watch – NBC Chicago

Editor’s Note: NBC Chicago offers a live feed of the evening and primetime speeches every Monday through Thursday in the player above and on the 24/7 streaming channel NBC 5 Chicago News.

The 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago will feature some notable speeches on Tuesday, including one from former President Barack Obama. But what time does the event start and when can you watch it?

After an eventful Monday evening, during which Vice President Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance, high-profile personalities gave speeches and President Joe Biden delivered a speech, the second day of the convention is scheduled to begin on Tuesday evening – albeit at a slightly different time than originally planned.

Here is a look at the schedule and full event schedule:

What time does the DNC start?

While many events will take place throughout the day, the “main program” is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a shift from the planned start time of 6 p.m. Organizers said the change was made to “ensure we stay on schedule.”

Organizers noted that there would likely be further changes to the schedule on Tuesday after Monday’s event required “real-time adjustments” and some speeches and appearances had to be canceled to accommodate Biden’s highly anticipated speech after the delays.

On the opening day, there was a delay of more than an hour, and some scheduled speakers, including musician James Taylor, had to be removed from the program, which the congress organizers attributed to the sustained applause for the speakers.

The 2024 DNC in Chicago runs through Thursday, August 22, with speeches expected each evening.

Schedule, speakers for the DNC

The full list of speakers and dates for Tuesday have not yet been released, but some of the Democratic Party’s biggest stars will be in attendance, with speeches not only from Obama himself, but also from former First Lady Michelle Obama and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker.

Biden will not be in the hall to see his former running mate’s speech, as he left Chicago on Monday after his own speech.

Other speeches expected on Tuesday include: U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senator Tammy Duckworth, Senator Bernie Sanders, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, Mayor John Giles of Mesa, Arizona, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff.

Giles is one of several Republican leaders who will speak at the DNC.

The Harris team announced Tuesday that former U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois and former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan are scheduled to speak, along with former Trump White House staffers Olivia Troye, a former national security official, and Stephanie Grisham, the White House press secretary.

Grisham said she knows Harris will “defend our freedoms and represent our nation with honesty and integrity.”

“I never thought I would be speaking at a Democratic National Convention,” she said in a statement. “But after seeing firsthand who Donald Trump really is and the threat he poses to our country, I feel strongly about speaking out.”

Unlike on Monday, Harris herself is not expected to attend. Harris and vice presidential candidate Tim Walz are both expected to hold a joint rally at the site of the Republican National Convention. However, Walz and Harris both have speeches scheduled for later at the convention.
