What you need to know about National Cheap Flight Day

Patrick Clarke

Now is the time to save big on your next flight.

Finally, Friday, August 23 is National Cheap Flight Day, a date that reflects the historical trend of significant price drops on flights as travel demand typically declines before the off-season.

This period is the ideal time to book your vacation before prices start to rise, peaking around the busy Thanksgiving holiday in late November.

According to data from online travel agency CheapOair, both domestic and international airfares are currently on the decline. In fact, the average price of a U.S. domestic airline ticket has dropped 33.4 percent since June 1, and the average price of U.S. international flights has dropped 10 percent over the same period.

The same trends can also be observed in Canada.

In addition, airfares for U.S. bookings for August and September are down 30 percent for domestic flights and 10 percent for international flights compared to the same period last year, CheapOair noted.

“As summer draws to a close and consumers are focused on returning to normal work and school schedules, our data shows that airfares are declining and we expect this trend to continue in the near future,” said Glenn Cusano, president of Fareportal, the company behind OTA brands CheapOair and OneTravel, in a statement. “By sharing this information, CheapOair reminds us that it really is the perfect time to start planning holiday travel early.”

Whether you work with an experienced travel advisor or monitor airfares through tools like Google Flights and subscription services like Going.com, the coming days offer travelers the best opportunities to secure the cheapest flight deals of 2024.

The flexibility to book and fly on specific days of the week can also save you money.
