play

Summer is coming to an end and with it daylight saving time. But you still have some time to prepare.

It’s still a few months before we change the clocks and gain another hour of sleep. Daylight saving time begins between March and November, when most Americans move their clocks forward an hour. In March, we move the clocks forward and lose an hour in our schedule, and in November, we move the clocks back to gain that hour back. Although this practice has been around for decades, not everyone wants it to stay that way.

Such time changes affect the daily lives of millions of Americans each year. The change can result in less sleep and changes in the schedule for children and pets in the days that follow.

Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for the time change this year.

When does daylight saving time end?

In 2024, daylight saving time will end on Sunday, November 3, at 2 a.m. local time. The day will go back one hour to 1 a.m.

Do all states observe daylight saving time?

Not every state observes daylight saving time.

Over the years, 19 states have attempted to abolish daylight saving time. However, there are only two states in the United States that do not observe the practice: Hawaii and Arizona.

Because of its desert climate, Arizona does not observe daylight saving time (except for the Navajo Nation). After most of the U.S. passed the Uniform Time Act, Arizona opted against changing its clocks so that sunset occurs an hour later during the hottest months of the year, USA TODAY reports.

Hawaii is so close to the equator that there is little difference in daylight hours throughout the year.

Five other US territories are also not participating:

  • American Samoa
  • Guam
  • Northern Mariana Islands
  • Puerto Rico
  • US Virgin Islands

When did daylight saving time begin?

Daylight saving time was introduced in Germany during World War I as the country looked for ways to save energy. Germany moved its clocks forward so that people would have more daylight at work. Several countries, including the United States in 1918, followed suit for the duration of the war.

Daylight saving time was reinstated during World War II to save energy for war production, and later became the national standard in the United States in 1966 when Congress passed the Uniform Time Act.

When is the first day of autumn?

The official first day of autumn is Sunday, September 22at 7:44 a.m. CT/8:44 a.m. ET, also known as the autumn equinox.

The equinox is known as the astronomical beginning of a season, but there is another way to measure the change of seasons.

The meteorological start of autumn is based on the annual temperature cycle and the 12-month calendar. According to this definition, each season begins on the first day of a specific month and lasts for three months. This means that summer ends on August 31 and autumn begins on September 1, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac.
