A police officer was shot and killed Wednesday night while attempting to retrieve a firearm from a sewer. The officer, identified as WayneDavidwas pronounced dead on arrival at hospital. David was a police officer for 25 years and has been part of the violent crime response team since 2007.

Veteran DC police officer and investigator Wayne David served with the Metropolitan Police Department for over 25 years.

According to the Washington Post Jeffrey Carroll – WikipediaDeputy Chief of the City Police Department, said: “David had seized hundreds of weapons and was known throughout the city.”

“Wayne is a true hero for the District of Columbia,” Carroll said, “and today he gave his life to serve the visitors and residents here.” He leaves behind his daughter and son and other relatives, Carroll said.

Carroll said officers saw the man place a firearm on the side of a sewer and then flee on the back of a motorcycle. As officers tried to retrieve the gun, “a shot went off” and struck David in the head, two public safety officials said.
