Steinfeld just revealed the details of her new cut in her newsletter Beau Society. Here’s what she recently told PEOPLE about the cut

When Hailee Steinfeld posted a photo on her Instagram profile on June 22, her first since April 4, she sent her fans into ecstasy.
The picture, in which she presented a bob haircut for the first time, shocked her followers.
The actress wrote: “Hello my lovelies!!! It’s been a while. Life is so great. I’ll fill you in on all the details of the nonsense soon…”
And now some of those details have come to light.

In the weeks that followed, Steinfeld previewed and launched her new passion project: Beau Society, a newsletter that aims to build a deeper connection with her audience. “I see this as a direct line where we can address topics that go way beyond what I can fit into an Instagram caption,” she wrote in her first post.
Fast forward to newsletter number three: Steinfeld let her fans in on the decision behind the major hair change and shared photos she and hairstylist Mara Roszak took during the transformation.

Speaking to PEOPLE about her partnership with Neutrogena, Steinfeld said she couldn’t remember her hair ever being this short.
“I was looking through old photos with my mom and there’s a photo of me – I kid you not, I must be nine or ten months old in this photo – and my mom had one of her ponytails (extensions) clipped to my head. So at 10 months old, this girl had long hair. I’ve never had hair that short,” she said.
For years, the only change to Steinfeld’s hair was that she occasionally wore bangs.
“It started out great – but it didn’t end great,” she said. “I love ponies so much and it breaks my heart to admit that I don’t think they’re right for me.”

Steinfeld has also worked on color changes, which she described as a “fun slide.”
For years she wondered, “What can I do with my hair besides cutting bangs and coloring it?” but she wasn’t ready for a complete haircut.
Until now. Steinfeld said, “I finally got to a point where I was like, ‘Okay, I’m ready for a change.’ I love my long hair, but I carry it around like dead weight now. And I wear it up more often than down, and I’m constantly trying to get it out of the way. Why don’t I just try something new?”

Then she asked Roszak to work her magic. She says Roszak worked her way up slowly at first, eventually cutting her hair into a bob. But Steinfeld was willing to go even shorter. “Once you get the taste for it, it’s game over.”
Steinfeld was so pleased with the result that she has cut her hair “shorter” since the first cut.
“Who knows what happens from here,” she said.

Steinfeld would like to show her fans more moments of her life through Beau Society, a project she has been working on for several years.
Steinfeld describes the opportunity for fans to respond to their newsletters with feedback and burning questions as “a direct communication channel, a two-way conversation.”
“It’s a fun, meaningful and safe place where we can grow, connect and share together,” she said.
Followers can expect more beauty content from the star, who is the bright new face of Neutrogena’s Collagen Bank Moisturizers.
“Since working with Neutrogena, my knowledge of collagen has increased tremendously,” she told PEOPLE.
“I learned that starting at age 20, we lose 1% of our skin collagen each year. I’m 27 years old – I need this product now more than ever.”

“She was always very careful about what she put on her skin, and I was always aware of that and appreciated it,” Steinfeld says.
“I have moments like that all the time where I realize I’m not 12 anymore – I’m 27 – and I thank God that she taught me everything she knew, directly or indirectly, because now I’m at a point in my life where it means something to me.”
