Why the house wine is not always the cheapest on the menu

If you go to a bar or restaurant that seems a bit too expensive, when in doubt you order the house wine, right?

Because it is by definition the cheapest, right?

Wrong – it seems to have little to do with price, but is simply what the company recommends.

So even though it’s often the cheapest wine, that’s not necessarily the case. Ouch.

Ashley Ragovin, founder of Pour This, said Bon appetit that the option is not always the cheapest on the menu – although it is likely to offer good value for money.

“There is no exact way to classify house wine; it depends on whose house you are in,” says Ragovin.

“Some restaurants are happy to present their guests with a rare find and introduce them to something delicious.

“Some are simply trying to get rid of the Sauvignon Blanc that wine buyers have over-ordered to make room in the cellar.”

However, if you’re looking for the cheapest wine on the menu, there’s a surefire way to do it: you can simply take a look at the wine list.
