COLUMBUS, Ohio – Will Howard was officially named the starting quarterback for Ohio State football by coach Ryan Day on Thursday.
Howard leads an offense that is likely one of the best in the country, and that title automatically puts him in the conversation for the Heisman Trophy.
DraftKings gives the Kansas State transfer odds of +1500 to win the trophy in December.
Here are the top 10 candidates for the award and their respective chances.
player | team | Heisman odds |
---|---|---|
QB Dillon Gabriel | Oregon | +750 |
QB Carson Beck | Georgia | +800 |
QB Quinn Ewers | Texas | +1000 |
QB Jaxson Dart | Ole Miss | +1400 |
Quarterback Jalen Milroe | Alabama | +1400 |
Quarterback Will Howard | Ohio State | +1500 |
QB Nico Iamaleava | Tennessee | +1500 |
QB Cam Ward | Miami | +2200 |
Quarterback Riley Leonard | Notre-Dame | +2200 |
QB Garrett Nussmeier | LSU | +2200 |
Howard begins his first season at Ohio State after transferring from Kansas State in the offseason. His arrival coincides with Chip Kelly’s first season as Day’s offensive coordinator.
With the Wildcats, Howard was a strong quarterback in many ways. In four seasons, he threw for 5,786 yards and 48 touchdowns while rushing for 921 yards and 19 scores.
Not only does Howard have the potential to put up impressive numbers, but he will also lead a team that is expected to be one of the best in the country – which could play a role in the Heisman Award voting.
The Buckeyes are considered favorites to win the Big Ten (+155) and have a good chance (-650) of making it to the first 12-team college football playoffs.
Only Georgia (+300) has better odds than Ohio State (+380) to win the national title. OSU’s overall regular season win percentage is 10.5.
