Wilson scores winning goal in Gamecocks’ game against Cardoso

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) – Former Gamecocks competed in the WNBA on Sunday, with A’ja Wilson’s last-second layup giving her Las Vegas Aces a 77-75 victory over Kamilla Cardoso’s Chicago Sky.

Wilson didn’t have a good day shooting (8 of 28 field goals), but scored the most important basket, scoring 20 points, 18 rebounds and 3 blocks.

“At that moment, I thought, this is what we’re supposed to do. This is the game. This is the entertainment, so this is what you guys wanted to see,” Wilson said of her winning goal. “I was so happy that we were able to deliver and be on the winning side. But at the same time, I think this game showed our hunger and resilience that we need to keep pushing forward.”

In addition to 8 points and 12 rebounds, Cardoso recorded a career-high 5 blocks, all of them against Wilson.

That was the most blocks Wilson has faced in a single game by a single player in her entire career. After following in Wilson’s footsteps at South Carolina, Cardoso excelled in defense against the league’s leading scorer.

Wilson is currently on pace to break the WNBA single-season scoring record as she averages nearly 27 points per game.
