Winona Ryder ‘cried’ after her ‘Stranger Things’ co-stars couldn’t identify a record

Make way, Demogorgons! Winona Ryder has revealed that the scariest thing from Stranger Things is the lack of musical experience among the younger performers.

The actress, who plays Joyce Byers in the hit Netflix series, told esquire about a harrowing incident during filming of the very first season when she held up a record and the children couldn’t recognize what it was.

“I cried,” she said.

To be fair, the youngest actors of Stranger Things – Noah Schnapp, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Finn Wolfhard and Caleb McLaughlin – were all between 10 and 14 years old when they started filming the science fiction series.

Ryder, who loves vinyl and turntables, admitted that she is well aware that her preference for analogue media is not exactly the norm these days.

“I just think social media has changed everything, and I know I sound old. I’m very conscious of that,” she said. “And part of me is like, ‘Oh my gosh, am I like a vaudeville act now?’ Like (an older lady’s voice): ‘Hey, kids, turn the music down!'”

Nevertheless, she admitted: “I think there was just such a wealth: the history of film, the history of photography, it is so rich and there is so much to discover there. I don’t think we should go back, but I wish and hope that the younger generation will study it.”

It is safe to say that they Stranger Things The co-stars now know the power of vinyl – if not because of Ryder’s teachings, then definitely because the show’s soundtracks have been pressed over the years.

Last month, Netflix announced that the cast was “about halfway through filming” the fifth and final season of Stranger Things. During the conversation with esquireRyder reflected that it had been a full 10 years since they all came together to film the very first season.

“Ten years! I never imagined that. (At first) I thought, ‘I don’t want to do this when I’m in my 50s!'” she teased. “It’s crazy, and it’s especially crazy being my age. But I love the guys and I love (the actors) Sadie (Sink) and Maya (Hawke). It’s been really wonderful.”
