Winter junior qualifier Nell Cagle will swim at Ohio State this fall (2024)

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is a proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment updates. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that they pursue with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who have supported them along the way.

Winter qualification for juniors Nell Cagle has committed to swim for Ohio State University, where she will begin her collegiate career in the fall of 2024.

“I am so excited to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Ohio State University!! Thank you to my family, friends, teammates and coaches who have helped me get this far. I also want to thank the Ohio State coaching staff for this incredible opportunity! I am so excited to be a Buckeye!”

A South Carolina native, Cagle trains at the South Carolina Swim Club and attended Oceanside Collegiate Academy in Mount Pleasant. At the 2023 SCHSL 3A Girls Championships in October, Cagle finished second in both the 200 individual medley (2:06.04) and 100 breaststroke (1:03.54) and helped her team to a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay and a third-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay.

Cagle specializes primarily in breaststroke, with additional emphasis on individual medley and shorter sprints. In her last short course competition, she placed 3rd in the 100 breaststroke with a season best of 1:02.21 and set two new personal bests in the 50 freestyle (23.31) and 200 individual medley (2:05.88).

Just prior to this meet, Cagle competed in the South Carolina Senior Championships, where she won the 100 breaststroke (1:02.43) and placed 3rd in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.40), both season bests at the time. Cagle also placed 8th in the 400 individual medley (4:40.01) and 11th in the 100 butterfly (57.28), demonstrating her ability to master a number of different events.

Best times SCY:

  • 100 Breaststroke – 1:02.01
  • 200 Breaststroke – 2:16.70
  • 100 m butterfly – 57.28
  • 200 medley – 2:05.88

The Buckeyes are a Division I team competing in the Big 10 Conference, where the women’s team finished second at the 2024 championships. Cagle’s times would have only earned her a place in the C final in the 100-meter breaststroke, but she is expected to be ranked fairly high on the Buckeyes’ roster next season.

Based on last season’s times, Cagle should be the second fastest on the team in the 100 breaststroke and third fastest in the 200 breaststroke, not counting the other freshmen. A handful of other breaststroke specialists will join Cagle in Columbus in the 2024-2025 season, making for good training partners over the next four years.

Cagle comes from a family of swimmers and practically has water in her DNA. Her mother swam at the University of Mexico while her stepfather swam at the University of Wisconsin. Cagle herself also enjoys going to the beach and swimming for fun, aside from training; she loves being in the water.

Outside of her water sports activities, Cagle enjoys reading in her free time.

Other members of Ohio State University’s Class of 2028 who will join Cagle in the fall include Emma Finnin, Susan, Delia Lloyd, Erin Klein, Daniela Varda, Elise Nardozzi, Maria Ramos, Sienna Angova, Mila Nikanorov And Rachel Bockrath.
