With wet hair and wide sweatpants, Katie Holmes masters the anti-fashion style

Most people have stepped out of the shower, thrown on a pair of grey sweatpants and an unironed top to run errands, but not everyone can look as good as Katie Holmes while doing it.

The actress was spotted in Manhattan wearing an ankle-length tracksuit – the kind you’d wear for lounging around the house – and an oversized, crumpled shirt that looked like she borrowed it from an ex-lover’s closet. She accessorized with a mustard pinstripe button-down shirt with cuffed sleeves, some shell beaded necklaces and a pair of retro sunglasses. Holmes, a staunch supporter of flats, slipped into suede fisherman sandals by Cos.

Holmes carried the Amelia tote bag by New York-based brand Khaite on her arm. Holmes completed her look with a wet-look lock of hair after a shower. Maybe there’s nothing wrong with “looking like you just fell out of bed.”

It’s not exactly surprising that Holmes, a New York street style icon herself, would wear something as casual as baggy sweatpants and an ill-fitting shirt. But what makes Holmes’ outfit stand out are the “fake” accessories – a styling trick the actress knows all about.

There’s her fisherman’s sandals, which would normally be reserved for more strenuous activities—or rather, a trip to the Mediterranean—rather than strolling the streets of Manhattan. The controversial shoe is making a comeback on the runways, however, which probably explains Holmes’ co-signing. And then there’s her Cate Holstein-designed tote bag, which costs $2,400 and probably far exceeds the value of the rest of the outfit. In theory, the pieces might not match—but in practice? Pretty consistent.

In May, Holmes explained, “I don’t like having a lot of stuff,” and said she prefers pieces that are “normal.” Well, aside from a five-figure shopping bag, tracksuits, undried hair, and a very wrinkled top are as “normal” as it gets.
