WWE Friday Night Smackdown (August 23, 2024 episode) preview, match card, results; is Roman Reigns okay?

The WWE Universe continues to charge toward Bash in Berlin, with the scene returning to the Blue Brand and all of its storylines. Last week was action-packed, as Roman Reigns was badly beaten by Jacob Fatu after once again obliterating Solo Sikoa and Tama Tonga in an in-ring confrontation. Fatu’s emergence, still in a walking boot, turned the tide. Will there be retribution on Friday? The Bloodline are on the card, defending their tag team belts.

Meanwhile, Cody Rhodes came to Kevin Owens’ aid when he was attacked by A-Town Down Under, reversing the relationship between the two during Rhodes’ feud with the aforementioned Bloodline. Tension was in the air ahead of the two meeting at the next PLE, the Bash in Berlin, next Saturday.

Since the PLE is broadcast abroad, next week’s episode of SmackDown will also be broadcast in Germany. This means that there are only two more SmackDown episodes in the USA on the Fox network, this one and the one from September 6th. On the 13th, SmackDown will move to its new home on the USA Network.

Date: Friday, 23 August 2024
Time: 8 p.m. ET
Location: Washington, DC
Transmitted: FOX

  • WWE Tag Team Championship Match – The Bloodline (Tama Tonga & Jacob Fatu) (C) vs. The Street Profits
    • The Bloodline doesn’t necessarily need the titles to be at the top of the blue brand. Will there be interference in this match?
  • WWE United States Championship Match – LA Knight (C) vs. Santos Escobar
    • Knight and Escobar have been dancing around each other for several weeks, with Santos stealing the catchphrase and changing it to “Es-co-bar-Si!”
  • Six-Woman Tag Team Match: Naomi, Jade Cargill and Bianca Belair vs. Blair Davenport, Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn
    • The rivalry between Cargill and Belair, who lost their titles to Fyre and Dawn without being defeated, continues with newcomers Naomi and Davenport, who wrestled last week. Everyone is just waiting for the divorce, but the brand is still keeping Cargill and Belair together for now.

The Grayson Waller Effect

That’s probably overkill. Then again, when doesn’t Waller’s mouth write a check that he has to cash with an overdraft? After calling out WWE Champion Cody Rhodes on X/Twitter, challenging him to appear on Grayson Waller Effect, then turning off his music, then interrupting his famous introductory question, then showing a video package of Rhodes’ friend and “Bash in Berlin” opponent Kevin Owens pretending to be a villain – that earned Waller and an unsuspecting Austin Theory a main event tag match against a pissed-off Owens, who asked General Manager Nick Aldis to make it official.

WWE United States Championship Match – LA Knight (C) vs. Santos Escobar

Of course, Escobar wouldn’t fight fair. Hell, he wouldn’t even wait for the bell to ring to unleash Legado Del Fantasma on Knight, a strategic move to avoid a disqualification for that pre-fight attack by his faction, but it got them thrown out of the ring and Escobar one-on-one with an angry Megastar. That ended with Escobar getting a hell of a headache from a brand new side effect, an elbow strike from the top rope, and a BFT ending Santos’ night.

‘Melo makes a promo

Andrade overran Carmelo Hayes in their rivalry, taking a 2-0 series lead before dropping a point to the rookie first-round pick last week before the two came to blows after Hayes showed disrespect after the win that sent Andrade flying. Hayes relaxed in his safe space, the barbershop, this week and continued to talk nonsense before Andrade burst in and had to be restrained – promising to teach him a lesson in a fourth match next week.

Six-Woman Tag Team Match: Naomi, Jade Cargill and Bianca Belair vs. Blair Davenport, Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn

Yes, this was a cracker, but less because of what the champions showed and more because of what we saw from Belair, Cargill, and the Glow Queen. Most of the match was dominated by Bianca and Davenport eventually turned the tide, but she and the Unholy Union never had a handle on it. Once Cargill was tagged in and the shop was ruined, all Naomi had to do was clean up the racket, and that’s exactly what she did. She ran through all three opponents before taking Davenport to the floor after a springboard split moonsault, even whipping her hair with each punch of the referee’s fist, because why not?
