Yolo Prescribed Burn Association offers free training series – Daily Democrat

The Yolo Prescribed Burn Association (PBA), in collaboration with Solano PBA, Napa PBA, and UC Cooperative Extension, is offering a free introductory training series on controlled burns, consisting of two virtual training sessions (offered via Zoom) and an in-person field day.

The training covers the fundamentals of controlled fires, such as fire behavior, local fuel types, burn windows, fire planning, ignitions and other topics to provide participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to participate safely and effectively in controlled fires.

In 2023, the Yolo County Resource Conservation District (RCD) formed the Yolo Prescribed Burn Association, a collaboration of landowners and community members to increase the capacity of controlled fires in Yolo County. Controlled burning is an effective land management tool that can manage invasive weeds, manage vegetation and fuels, and improve ecosystem health.

To increase regional capacity for prescribed fires, Yolo PBA has partnered with regional PBAs to host this training series consisting of two virtual training evenings on Monday, August 19, 2024 and Thursday, August 22, 2024 from 6-8 p.m. via Zoom and an in-person field day. The virtual training will be recorded and posted on the Yolo County RCD website for individuals unable to attend, but must be reviewed prior to the in-person training day.

One in-person field day will be offered in each of the three counties. People are welcome to attend any in-person field day that fits their schedule, regardless of county affiliation. The Yolo County in-person field day will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2024 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Esparto. For more field day options, visit the website linked below.

To register for the virtual sessions and one of the three in-person field days, please visit www.yolorcd.org/rxfire-training-2024.

This training series does not include live fire demonstrations and does not provide certification. This training is intended for individuals who have little to no experience with controlled fires or who want to refresh their knowledge of controlled fire basics. The training is open to anyone who wants to participate in or conduct controlled fires, including oak woodland owners, ranchers, potential volunteers, and the public.

If you have any questions, please contact Bailey Adams, Yolo PBA Coordinator, at [email protected] or call the RCD office at 530-661-1688.
