In the film directed by Luca Guadagnino, Zendaya plays Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach to her husband Art (Mike Faist) who stands up to her ex-boyfriend Patrick (Josh O’Connor), who is trying to revive his athletic career.

“I felt like it was a good step into a more, you could say, ‘grown-up’ role and the next phase,” she told Elle, noting that it was her “first time” playing a female lead.

“It was a little scary to take that on, but I think it’s a good feeling. To be like, ‘Ooh, can I do this?’ You could run away from that feeling and stay safe and secure, or you could say, ‘You know what, screw it.'”

Meanwhile, Zendaya recently spoke with Digital Spy about her return to the role of Chani in “Dune: Part 2” and her character’s relationship with Timothée Chalamet’s Paul.

“I think it’s much more than just a love story, it’s more of a complicated relationship where love gets in the way,” she explained before the film’s release.

“And how are these two characters going to deal with it? I don’t know how they’re going to get over it. I don’t know what the future holds for them. Without giving it away, it’s not pretty.”

Challengers will be released in the UK on April 26th.
