A leafy suburb that regularly ranks among the most expensive zip codes in the country is, not surprisingly, the scene of the most expensive home sale of the year in the Garden State.
Last month, a $16.7 million sale was completed for a sprawling 230,000-square-foot estate in Bergen County’s Alpine district. Built in 2004, the home sits on about four acres in the county’s Rio Vista neighborhood and was previously listed for sale in March for nearly $20 million.
The impressive home, with 12-foot ceilings on four floors accessible by elevator, has eight bedrooms, nine full bathrooms and three half baths. With a total of 25 rooms, a brick exterior and a slate roof, the home offers high-end amenities such as a bowling alley, home theater, billiards room and a large wine cellar.
The outdoor area of the home is equally impressive and features a pool, cabana, tennis court and putting green. There is a separate guest house on the property as well as a garage with space for up to eight cars. A commercial generator and several high-efficiency furnaces have been added to the property.
The house is located not far from Rio Vista, a large stone tower built in 1910 that is perhaps Alpine’s greatest landmark. It was originally built by millionaire sugar importer and former Alpine resident Manuel Rionda as a gift for his wife.
The sellers bought the mansion in 2013 for $13.375 million, according to land records, meaning they took home a profit despite a lower asking price than originally asked. The home was offered by Rosemarie Campi at Prominent Properties Sotheby’s International Realty-Alpine.
The $16.7 million sale price appears to have surpassed the Garden State’s previous record set in 2024. Another home in Alpine on Cambridge Way, which sold for $8 million in May after sitting on the market for years, appears to be the previous record.
Alpine is regularly ranked as one of the most expensive towns not only in New Jersey, but in the entire country. Over the years, numerous celebrities, including Chris Rock, have called Alpine home, and the borough regularly boasts high-profile sales, including a home formerly owned by NHL All-Star Ilya Kovalchuk that sold for $10.9 million last year.
Despite Alpine’s prestige, it doesn’t command the highest asking price in the state. According to the Asbury Park Press, the most expensive home currently for sale in New Jersey is an equestrian property in Colts Neck that sits on a whopping 160 acres and includes seven bedrooms, 12 bathrooms and a barn.
