The Nvidia app gets an update and is a must-have for GeForce GPU users

NvidiaApp has just received a major new update, with the GPU maker incorporating several new features previously available in other Nvidia apps, such as GeForce Experience and the Nvidia Control Panel. These new features include adjustments to display settings such as resolution and refresh rate, as well as a new section that includes Nvidia’s video enhancement technologies such as RTX Video Super Resolution.

With the new update (version 10.0.2.207), it’s easier than ever to get the most out of Nvidia’s best graphics card models. Technically, the app is still in beta, but we’ve been using it for months and it’s a huge improvement over Nvidia’s previous, disparate apps.

The first major feature of the new Nvidia app update is the inclusion of a Displays section in the System tab. This handles Windows resolution, refresh rate, and orientation controls for your monitors as well as other connected display devices.

While this is hardly a revolutionary change, it does mean that you can change these settings as well as other graphics settings from the same interface. What’s more, opening the Nvidia app from the taskbar is actually much easier than minimizing all windows, right-clicking on your desktop, and opening Windows Display Settings.

Alongside this new Displays section, there’s another new section simply called Video. Here you get access to RTX Video HDR and RTX Video Super Resolution, as well as sliders to adjust both of these features. RTX Video HDR lets you pull up standard dynamic range videos to look like HDR videos, with color and contrast range expansion enhanced by Nvidia’s RTX AI capabilities. It works with streaming videos and local files played in Chromium-based browsers and in VLC.

At the same time, RTX Video Super Resolution also uses AI to enhance streaming video by removing compression artifacts and sharpening edges during upscaling.

Other improvements to the Nvidia app include a reorganization of the Graphics tab so that you can now alphabetize the extensive list of apps and games (for which you can assign custom graphics settings). The list can also be filtered, and you can hide entries from the list.

The changes continue, and the Settings section now lets you choose different languages for the Nvidia app. The stats overlay can now display 1% lower frame rate numbers alongside other real-time stats like CPU usage, latency, and other GPU information.

In a potentially controversial move, Nvidia has also provided the ability to integrate its AI app ChatRTX into the Nvidia app. ChatRTX is a localized AI system that can scan the files on your system and then use large language models or image generation AI models (powered locally by your RTX GPU) to ask questions and interact with your data.

For those who are not interested in AI, this may be an unwelcome step towards introducing AI into their system, but currently installing the app is completely optional and ChatRTX runs entirely locally anyway, so there is no risk to data security.

The final piece of the puzzle is that Nvidia is giving new Xbox Game Pass members a month of free access to PC Game Pass. The company is touting this as one of the benefits of using the Nvidia app, but there’s nothing actually related to the app in the promotion. You’ll just see this and future offers advertised there.

You can download the latest version of the Nvidia app here. It is available for free to all Nvidia GPU users. In fact, it is free for everyone, but if you don’t have an Nvidia GPU, it won’t be of much use to you.
