A “Stranger Things” prequel set in 1959 is coming to Broadway

Stranger Things may be preparing to release its fifth and final season, but the sci-fi series will live on as a Broadway play.

Stranger Things: The First Shadow The series debuted in London’s West End at the end of last year. As a prequel, it is set 24 years before the Netflix series and looks back at the lives of young Jim Hopper, Joyce Maldonado and Bob Newby and his sister Patty in 1959 in Hawkins, Indiana.

“Before the world fell apart. Hawkins, 1959: a normal town with normal worries. Young Jim Hopper’s car won’t start, Bob Newby’s sister doesn’t take his radio show seriously, and Joyce Maldonado just wants to graduate and then disappear. When new student Henry Creel arrives, his family realizes that starting over isn’t so easy… and the shadows of the past linger,” says the play’s synopsis.

After his debut in the West End The first shadow has won two Olivier Awards, one for Best Comedy Play and one for Best Set Design. The final productions in London will conclude in February. The first shadow Previews will be shown on Broadway in March 2025, followed by public performances in April.

The play’s screenplay was written by Kate Trefry and is based on an original story by the Duffer brothers, Jack Thorne and Trefry. Stephen Daldry will direct the three-hour production, with Netflix and Sonia Friedman producing.
