What you need to know if you are traveling to Ohio from another state to buy marijuana

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Ohio joins the growing list of states where recreational use of marijuana is now legal for adults. However, some neighboring states do not have the same laws.

Jason Erkes, chief communications officer at Cresco Labs, says they had more than 1,200 people in their four Sunnyside dispensaries on Tuesday, when recreational marijuana sales began in Ohio.

Some customers asked what would happen if they brought cannabis purchased in Ohio across state lines, where marijuana is not legal for medical or recreational use.

In Indiana, marijuana is illegal for both medical and recreational use. However, there are also states surrounding Indiana where marijuana is legal to some extent.

“It doesn’t matter where in another state you got it. You have to obey the laws of our state when you are in our state,” said Indiana State Police Sergeant Stephen Wheeles.

In March 2023, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear signed Senate Bill 47, which legalizes medical marijuana beginning January 1, 2025.

“So we’re seeing that in some of these other states. I expect that’s going to happen in Ohio as well,” Sergeant Wheeles said. “A lot of times we get the response, ‘Well, I bought it legally in another state.’ We want people to understand that just because you bought it legally in another state or didn’t know it was still illegal in Indiana doesn’t make it OK, and it doesn’t save you from being cited or charged for possession of marijuana.”
